New Delhi, March 27: The Government of India on Friday firmly dismissed widespread rumours suggesting a possible nationwide lockdown due to the ongoing West Asia crisis, calling such claims “completely false and misleading.”

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, categorically denied the speculation, stating that “there is no proposal under consideration” for imposing any lockdown in the country. His remarks come amid growing concerns on social media and messaging platforms that geopolitical tensions could disrupt fuel supplies and trigger emergency restrictions.

Echoing the clarification, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also urged citizens not to believe or circulate unverified information. She emphasized that the government is closely monitoring the global situation and is fully prepared to handle any economic or supply-side challenges.

The rumours gained traction following escalating tensions in West Asia, raising fears about potential disruptions in crude oil supply chains. However, government officials reassured that India’s energy security remains stable, with sufficient reserves and diversified import sources in place to manage any short-term volatility.

Senior officials further highlighted that there is no cause for panic, and essential services, including fuel supply and transportation, continue to function normally across the country. Authorities have also warned against the spread of misinformation, stating that strict action may be taken against those responsible for creating unnecessary panic.

Experts note that while global geopolitical developments can influence energy markets, India has significantly strengthened its preparedness in recent years, reducing the likelihood of extreme measures such as lockdowns.

As uncertainty continues in the international arena, the government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining stability and ensuring that citizens are not affected by speculative narratives. For now, officials stress that the situation is under control and that everyday life will continue without disruption.
