Malda (West Bengal): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday flagged off India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train from Malda in West Bengal, marking a major milestone in the country’s railway modernisation journey. The launch is expected to significantly improve long-distance rail travel, particularly on the busy Howrah–Guwahati route.

According to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the new sleeper-version Vande Bharat train will reduce travel time by approximately 2.5 hours, offering passengers a faster, safer and more comfortable overnight journey. The train has been designed to cater to long-haul travellers, combining speed with modern sleeping arrangements.

The PMO noted that the introduction of this advanced train service will also provide a major boost to religious travel and tourism across eastern and northeastern India. The Howrah–Guwahati corridor connects several important religious destinations and tourist hubs, and the reduced travel time is expected to encourage more people to opt for rail travel.

Equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, the Vande Bharat sleeper train features improved safety systems, modern coaches, enhanced passenger comfort, and energy-efficient technology. Railway officials said the train represents a new generation of indigenous rolling stock aligned with the government’s vision of “Make in India” and world-class public infrastructure.

The launch from Malda holds special significance for West Bengal, as it strengthens the state’s rail connectivity with the Northeast and reinforces Malda’s role as an important railway junction. Officials added that more Vande Bharat sleeper trains are planned on other long-distance routes in the coming months.

With this flag-off, the government has taken another step towards transforming Indian Railways into a faster, more reliable, and passenger-friendly transport system, while also supporting regional development, tourism, and economic growth.
